Donate Cars to the Blind
For those that have sight, it is hard to imagine being blind. If you’re considering a charitable act, here’s information on how to donate cars to the blind.
Charitable entities rely entirely on the compassion of others. Americans are famous for their generosity as highlighted in the donations given to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Tsunami in Asia. While such largeness is commendable, many entities need donations throughout the year. Charities focused on helping the blind are one such group.
The much maligned tax code gives Americans a break if they donate cars to charities. The process is fairly simple. To donate cars to the blind, you simply select a relevant charity and make the donation. Under new tax rules, the charity will provide you a receipt when they pick up the car. The charity will then sell the car at an auction, essentially turning your old hunk of junk into money that can help the blind.
When the charity sells the car, the actual price paid by the buyer is the amount you can deduct. Before 2006, you could just claim the fair market value of the car, but the rules have changed. The charity will send you an acknowledgement that the car has been sold and the price paid for it. The price paid is the amount you can deduct on your tax return. Make sure you keep the correspondence from the charity so you can prove the deduction to the IRS should it ever be questioned.
